Why Rent a Car in Curaçao?
Curaçao is a small island, but public transportation is limited outside Willemstad, and taxis add up fast if you're exploring beyond your resort. Renting a car is the most practical way to see the island properly.
Reach the West Coast Beaches
Curaçao's most beautiful beaches — Playa Kenepa, Playa Kalki, Playa Lagun — sit on the island's western side, well outside walking or taxi range for most visitors. A rental car makes the whole coastline accessible in a single day.
Save Money on Longer Stays
For trips longer than a couple of days, a rental car is almost always cheaper than repeated taxi fares, especially once you factor in multiple beach visits, restaurant trips and airport transfers.
Go at Your Own Pace
No waiting for tour pickup times or fixed excursion schedules — stop for a swim, a photo, or an extra hour at your favorite beach without planning around anyone else.
Public Transport Is Limited
Curaçao's bus network mainly serves Willemstad and nearby areas. Once you head toward Westpunt, Jan Thiel or Blue Bay, a car (or a lot of patience) becomes necessary.

Choose the Right Vehicle.
Start with the kind of driving you expect to do. A compact car is easy around Willemstad, an SUV gives you more flexibility for rougher western routes, and larger vehicles make group travel more comfortable.
Economy & Compact
The most popular and budget-friendly car rental option in Curaçao. Easy to park around Willemstad's narrow streets, fuel-efficient for island driving, and ideal for solo travelers or couples staying close to the city center.
SUV & 4x4
Purpose-built for Westpunt's unpaved roads, beach access tracks and rougher terrain on the island's western side. If Playa Kenepa, Playa Kalki or off-the-beaten-path snorkeling spots are on your list, an SUV rental is worth the upgrade.
Scooter
A fun, affordable way to get around Willemstad and nearby beach towns. Best for confident local drivers covering short distances rather than full-island road trips.
Convertible
Enjoy Curaçao's year-round sunshine with the top down. Best suited to coastal drives and scenic routes rather than Westpunt's longer unpaved stretches.
Family & Minivan
Extra room for luggage, car seats and passengers — the practical choice for families or groups of four or more traveling together across the island.
Automatic vs. Manual
Automatic transmission is easier for most visitors and the more common choice. Manual rentals are often available at a lower daily rate if you're comfortable driving one.
Quad & ATV
A fun, adventurous way to explore Punda and beyond. Popular for short excursions and a different perspective on the island's streets and coastline.
See Curaçao Your Way.
The vehicle is only the beginning. From the mountain roads around the west to colorful Willemstad streets and the waterfront, having your own ride gives you more freedom to choose where the day goes.

Messages from travelers who found their rental through Curaçao Services and booked with one of our partners.
We ended up driving all over the place 😂 Westpunt, Cas Abao, Playa Kenepa and a bunch of little stops along the way. Honestly, having a car made the trip so much better. We got to see way more of Curaçao than we would have otherwise. Definitely glad we rented one!
We stayed around Willemstad but spent most of our time exploring. Westpunt, Cas Abao, a few beaches we just happened to drive past… that's probably what we enjoyed most about having the car. We could just jump in and go wherever we wanted. Great trip!
The car was perfect for us and we had no issues with the booking or pickup. We spent a lot of time driving around the island, stopping whenever we saw somewhere that looked nice. The beaches were amazing and we really enjoyed exploring outside of Willemstad. We definitely recommend having a car if you want to see more of Curaçao!
We basically used the car every day 😂 Beaches in the morning, Willemstad for lunch, then somewhere completely different in the afternoon. Curaçao is definitely an island you want to explore, so having a car made a huge difference. Had an amazing time!
Everything went well with the rental and we had the freedom to explore the island at our own pace. We drove to different beaches, went into Willemstad, found some really nice restaurants and just enjoyed being able to go wherever we wanted. Such a beautiful island. We are already talking about coming back! 🇨🇼❤️

Car Rental FAQ for Curaçao.
Do I need an international driver's license to rent a car in Curaçao?
A valid driver's license from your home country is generally accepted, though requirements can vary by rental company and nationality. Confirm current requirements with your chosen partner before booking.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Curaçao?
Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21, with some requiring 25 for certain vehicle categories. Younger drivers may face a young-driver surcharge — check the specific policy when booking.
Is it safe to drive a rental car in Curaçao?
Yes, Curaçao is generally considered safe and easy to drive. Roads are well-maintained in and around Willemstad; some western routes toward Westpunt are unpaved, which is where an SUV becomes useful.
Can I pay for a rental car with a debit card?
Most rental companies require a credit card for the security deposit — debit cards are often not accepted for this purpose. Confirm accepted payment methods with your rental partner before arrival.
Should I book a rental car in advance or wait until I arrive?
Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak season, since popular vehicle types can sell out and advance rates are often lower than walk-up pricing.
Do I need a 4x4 to visit Curaçao's west coast beaches?
Not strictly required, but an SUV or 4x4 makes the unpaved roads near Westpunt considerably easier — a standard economy car can usually still get there with careful driving.
