01 · PICKUP CHECKLIST

Have these four things ready.

The current requirements guide identifies the core documents and payment method most travelers need at the rental counter.

01 · LicenseValid driver's licenseMust be current and in the primary driver's name.
02 · PaymentCredit cardPrimary driver's name and sufficient available credit for the hold.
03 · IDPassportUsed for identification and to verify tourist status.
04 · BookingRental confirmationPrinted or digital, including the reservation number.

Make the pickup boring.

Keep your documents together and make sure the name on the driver's license, rental agreement and credit card matches. A few minutes of preparation can prevent a frustrating counter experience.

02 · DRIVER'S LICENSE

Is your home-country license enough?

Most visitors do not need a separate local license. The important exception is when your license uses a non-Roman alphabet or does not provide information the supplier can readily verify.

United States

Any valid US state driver's license is accepted by most rental companies in Curaçao.

Canada

Valid Canadian provincial licenses are accepted by most rental companies.

Europe

Valid licenses from EU countries, the UK, Switzerland and Norway are generally accepted.

Other Countries

Most major-country licenses are accepted. Check the specific supplier if your license format or language is unusual.

When an IDP may be needed

The current guide says an International Driving Permit may be required when your license is not in English, Dutch or Spanish, particularly where it uses a non-Roman alphabet.

When an IDP is useful

Even when not required, the guide recommends an IDP for extra peace of mind or if you plan to drive in other Caribbean islands.

Get it before you travel

If you need an IDP, obtain it in your home country. The current guide says IDPs cannot be issued in Curaçao.

Carry both documents

An IDP is a translation document, not a replacement for your original license. Keep the original valid license with you.

03 · AGE REQUIREMENTS

Your age can change the rental conditions.

There is no single island-wide rental age. Supplier policies differ, particularly for younger drivers and certain vehicle categories.

Age GroupTypical RequirementAdditional Fee / RestrictionPlanning Note
Under 21Not accepted by most companiesGenerally cannot rentCheck specialist suppliers if applicable
21–24Accepted by some companies$10–$20/day young-driver feeVehicle categories may be restricted
25–70Standard rental ageNo standard young-driver feeNormal requirements apply
70+Accepted by most companiesSome suppliers may have restrictionsConfirm the individual policy

Do not assume 21 means every car is available.

The current guide says some companies allow drivers from 21, while others require 25, especially for certain vehicle categories. Always check the age policy attached to the specific vehicle you are booking.

04 · CREDIT CARD & DEPOSIT

The card in your wallet matters at pickup.

Most rental companies require a credit card in the primary driver's name because the security deposit is normally held against available credit.

Cardholder name must match

The name on the credit card should match the primary driver and rental agreement. If another person is paying, check the supplier's rules before arrival.

Have enough available credit

The current guide says the deposit hold is typically $500–$1,500 depending on the vehicle and supplier. The amount is reserved against your available credit.

Major cards are common

Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely accepted, but acceptance can vary by supplier.

Debit cards are often not accepted

Most companies require a credit card for the security deposit. A limited number of suppliers may accept debit cards with additional conditions.

Economy / compact$500–1,500Typical deposit range in the current requirements guide.
Deposit typeCredit holdUsually a pre-authorization rather than a normal purchase.
Debit cardUsually noLimited supplier exceptions may exist.
Prepaid cardNot acceptedThe card generally must be linked to a credit line.
05 · DOCUMENTS

Your complete pickup document checklist.

Put these together before leaving home so you are not searching through email or luggage at the counter.

Valid Driver's License

It must not be expired and must be in the primary driver's name. The current guide notes that non-Roman-alphabet licenses may require an IDP translation.

Credit Card

Bring the physical card in the primary driver's name with enough available credit for the deposit hold.

Passport

The current guide lists a passport as required for identification and to verify tourist status.

Rental Confirmation

Have the reservation confirmation available digitally or printed, including the booking or reservation number.

IDP if Applicable

If your license is in a non-Roman alphabet or the supplier specifically requests an IDP, bring the IDP together with your original license.

Additional Driver Documents

If you add another driver, that person must meet the supplier's requirements and present the requested identification and license at pickup.

06 · INSURANCE

Requirements do not end with the documents.

Basic liability is generally included, but it does not protect the rental vehicle itself. Review the optional coverage before you sign.

Basic Liability

Required · Included

Covers damage to other vehicles and property and bodily injury to others. It does not cover damage to your rental car, theft or your own personal injury.

Collision Damage Waiver

Optional · $15–$30/day

Reduces or eliminates your liability for covered damage to the rental car, subject to the supplier's terms and any deductible.

Theft Protection

Optional · $5–$15/day

Provides protection against theft of the rental vehicle under the policy conditions.

Personal Accident Insurance

Optional · $5–$10/day

Covers medical expenses for you and passengers. Check whether your travel insurance already provides this protection.

Check your existing coverage first.

The requirements guide recommends checking your personal auto insurance and credit-card benefits before purchasing additional rental coverage. If you rely on them, verify that Curaçao is covered and understand the exclusions.

07 · ADDITIONAL DRIVERS

Adding another driver? Do it officially.

Do not let another person drive the rental unless they are properly added to the rental agreement.

Same age requirements

Additional drivers must meet the same age requirements as the primary driver.

Same license requirements

They must have a valid driver's license and satisfy the supplier's license-duration and ID requirements.

Present at pickup

The current guide says additional drivers must be present at pickup with the requested license and identification.

Typical fee

Expect roughly $5–$10 per day per additional driver, although some companies waive the fee for spouses.

Ask about the spouse exemption.

Some rental companies waive the additional-driver fee for spouses. It is supplier-specific, so ask when booking rather than assuming the exemption applies.

08 · RESTRICTIONS

Meeting the requirements does not mean everything is allowed.

Your rental agreement can contain important use restrictions beyond the basic pickup documents.

No Off-Road Driving

Most rental agreements prohibit off-road driving. Stick to paved and maintained roads unless your specific vehicle and agreement explicitly allow otherwise.

No Other-Island Ferries

The current guide says rental cars cannot be taken on ferries to other Caribbean islands.

No Commercial Use

Rental cars cannot be used for commercial activities such as delivery services or ride-sharing unless the agreement explicitly permits it.

Smoking Restrictions

Most companies prohibit smoking in rental cars and may charge cleaning fees for violations.

Pet Policies

Some companies permit pets in carriers while others do not allow pets. Check before traveling with an animal.

Check Unpaved Routes

Even if a road is physically passable, damage from unpaved roads may fall outside your insurance coverage. Verify the agreement first.

09 · REQUIREMENTS FAQ

Your pickup questions, answered.

These answers follow the current requirements guide. Supplier-specific terms always take priority.

Can I rent a car with a debit card?

Most rental companies in Curaçao require a credit card for the security deposit. A limited number of suppliers may accept debit cards under additional conditions, such as purchasing their full insurance package or providing a higher deposit.

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

Not for most visitors from the US, Canada or Europe. The current guide says an IDP may be required when a license is not in English, Dutch or Spanish, particularly when it uses a non-Roman alphabet.

What if I am under 25?

Drivers aged 21–24 can rent from some companies but may pay a young-driver fee of $10–$20 per day. Drivers under 21 are generally not accepted. Always check the exact supplier policy.

How much is the security deposit?

The current requirements guide says deposits typically range from $500–$1,500 depending on vehicle type and rental company. The hold is placed on the credit card and released after the rental is completed according to the supplier's process.

Can I add my spouse as an additional driver for free?

Some rental companies waive the additional-driver fee for spouses. This varies by company, so ask when booking. Otherwise, the guide gives a typical range of $5–$10 per day.

Can I rent if I just received my driver's license?

The current requirements guide does not specify a universal minimum license-holding period. Supplier policies can differ, so check the exact booking conditions before traveling if your license is new.
